Flying Colors Comics in Concord CA celebrates the 15th annual Free Comic Book Day on Saturday May 7th. The worldwide event was founded by Flying Colors' owner, Joe Field, as a way to introduce the comic book art form to new readers, while calling back former readers and thanking all current fans. More than 2300 comic book specialty shops in over 60 countries around the world will give away more than six million comic books this year. 

With the 2015 event drawing more than 1.4 million people to comic shops, Free Comic Book Day is the world's largest comic book related event.

Special Guests at Flying Colors Comics event will be artist Brian Hess of the all-ages fantasy series Awake from Action Lab Entertainment and artist Brandon McKinney of Bruce Lee: The Dragon Rises from DarbyPop Publishing. Both artists will be signing their FCBD Special Edition comics from 11am-2pm.

 “Our Free Comic Book Day is a big party. This year, there are 50 different FCBD special edition comics and the publishers have done a fantastic job of producing comics for all ages and reading interests. There's never been a better time for anyone to discover the rich entertainment found in comic books," said Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics.   

Now in its fifteenth year, Free Comic Book Day is an international success, introducing new readers to the wonders of comics the first Saturday of May every year. “Free Comic Book Day is our welcome invitation for everyone to visit us at Flying Colors. We know you'll have a great time here on May 7th, because our event is such a big party, with special guest comic artists, refreshments, entertainment, costumed characters, a kids' costume contest and, of course, thousands of free comics. We also encourage everyone to bring their cameras and have their photos taken with costumed characters.”

Bedford Gallery's My Hero! Contemporary super-hero themed art show

We know comics fans will love the art show happening right now at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek's Lesher Center for the Arts.  This exhibit will be on display at the Bedford until March 20. From there it goes on a three year tour of museums across the Unites States.

I recently took in the exhibit and had a lot of fun seeing what statements contemporary artists are trying to make with their dabbling in pop culture's most popular super-heroes.

Last summer, I wrote about our trip to Europe where we visited some world famous art museums. There's a part of me that flinches at some contemporary artists making tons of money off the original work of others. Case in point, famous pop artist Roy Lichetenstein making millions off of blatantly stolen panels from comics artists like Russ Heath, Jack Kirby and John Romita, while those comics artists got nothing from the sale of work that they originally did.

The My Hero! exhibit at the Bedford Gallery brought back a few of those feelings. However, while there's a quite a bit of homage to the original comic artists, there's nothing that's blatantly stolen (like Lichtenstein's "work") and credit is given where credit is due.

So by all means, see the My Hero! exhibit before it closes in Walnut Creek on March 20. 

On St Patty's Day, March 17, the Bedford will host a "Hops & Heroes" event with California craft beers to go along with the super-hero themed exhibit. Sounds like fun!

Flying Colors Brings Marvel’s Avengers to Pleasant Hill CA

Exclusive New Edition Showcases Local Landmark by Renowned Comics Artist Arthur Adams

 

Marvel’s mightiest Avengers are among the world’s most popular super-heroes, but starting on March 2, they will be especially popular in beautiful Pleasant Hill California.

Flying Colors Comics, known as one of the world’s best comic book specialty shops, is teaming with Marvel Comics to produce a special limited edition of AVENGERS STANDOFF ALPHA #1 featuring Pleasant Hill’s historic landmark, the Soldier’s Memorial Monument.  This special edition comes with exclusive cover art by fan favorite artist and Contra Costa County resident Arthur Adams.

“This is all about keeping it local and shining the light of super-heroes on this beautiful area,” said Joe Field, owner of the award-winning Flying Colors Comics on Treat Boulevard in Concord, just up the road from Pleasant Hill CA. “The story in this comic book may take place in a fictitious Pleasant Hill, but I’m excited to put together this special edition showcasing the real Pleasant Hill’s most famous landmark. Having local superstar comics artist Arthur Adams do the art for this special edition makes it even cooler.”

The Flying Colors Avengers Standoff Alpha #1 Pleasant Hill special edition will be available exclusively at Flying Colors Comics starting on Wednesday March 2. Flying Colors is at 2980 Treat Boulevard at Oak Grove Road in Concord. The store is open daily from 11am-7pm.

Flying Colors Comics is the longest continuously operating comic book specialty store in Contra Costa County, serving the area since 1988. The store has received numerous awards, including Best of the Bay, A-List and the prestigious Will Eisner “Spirit of Comics” Award for Retailing Excellence.

The Soldier’s Memorial Monument at the corner of Contra Costa Boulevard and Boyd Road in Pleasant Hill CA was dedicated in 1927 and originally built as a memorial to the thousands of Contra Costa County men and women, including 77 fatalities, who served their country during World War I.

With a career spanning more than 30 years, Arthur Adams is a world renowned comics artist whose work includes such popular characters as the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Godzilla, Superman and Gumby.

The Avengers characters appearing on this special limited edition will also be featured in the next blockbuster Marvel movie “Captain America: Civil War” opening in theaters worldwide on May 6.
