Death of Superman: 25 Years Ago!

Throwback Thursday to November 1992...
25 years ago this week!

Crazy times in the comics' world!

"The Death of Superman" made headlines and newscasts all over the world.

I was interviewed by Faith Fancher (RIP) of KTVU Channel 2 at the Capital City Distribution warehouse in San Leandro. (Photo by Oscar Benjamin)

Then, at Flying Colors Comics, we had a line out the door at Flying Colors that lasted until we ran out of copies.

And, shock of shocks, Superman didn't die after all... and he's still going strong.

Sat Nov 4: "Comic Shop" Book Event

Join us for this very special event at Flying Colors.

Saturday
November 4 4PM-8PM

With the release of COMIC SHOP: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture, we're inviting some of the key players from the early days of comic shops in and around the Bay Area. This is going to be a fun evening of lively conversation and a look behind the history of comic shops, especially in the greater Bay Area.

Guests include: Author Dan Gearino, writer/publisher/business executive/talent agent Mike Friedrich, comics retailing pioneers Bud Plant and Dick "BigGuy" Swan (Comics and Comix), Joe Ferrara (Atlantis Fantasyworld, Santa Cruz), and Brian Hibbs (Comix Experience, San Francisco).

The Geek Speak Video Show will be shooting a live interview with author Dan Gearino and the attending guests.

Beverages and appetizers will be available.

About COMIC SHOP:
The early 1970s saw the birth of the modern comic book shop. What's the story behind the fall of comics at your local newsstand and the rise of market for comic book specialty shops? COMIC SHOP is the story of dynamic entrepreneurs, and the deals that led to a resurgence for comics in the U.S. and Canada. In this way, The growth of comic shops created new spaces for quirky ideas to gain an audience and helped transform small-press series, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Bone, into media giants.

COMIC SHOP is the first book to trace this history, from the origins of comic shops to the present day, when the rise of digital platforms has the industry at a crossroads even as sales are robust. Author Dan Gearino traveled to see comic shops around the country. Along the way he interviewed those who shaped comics retailing from the early days, to the shop owners who continue to push the industry in new directions.

Dan Gearino is a lifelong comics reader with tastes that swing from the classic Legion of Super-Heroes to the work of Michel Rabagliati. As a business reporter for the Columbus Dispatch, he has won national recognition for his work.

50 Years Ago Today: The Summer of Comics!

Summer of '17 is my 50th anniversary of being a full-fledged #comics fan!

The photo here is from early '69,  and i was reading Marvel Collector's Item Classics no. 20.

Over on Twitter, I share a thread of memories, including the seminal introduction of the Fantastic Four and Amazing Spider-Man animated series that debute 50 years ago on this date... September 9, 1967.

You can read those memories, and get a kick out of the photos, by hitting this link:

Dan Brereton Highlights Guest for FlyCo Mini Indie-Con

-->
Flying Colors to Host Local Comics Artists
3rd Annual FlyCo Mini Indie-Con Showcases Bay Area Talent, Benefits Charity

Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff presents the third annual "FlyCo Mini Indie-Con," a showcase of local independent comic book artists and writers on Saturday August 26 from 11AM-4PM at 2980 Treat Boulevard in Concord.

Featured guests are:
Daniel Brereton, award-winning artist/writer of Nocturnals: Sinister Path and Giantkiller (set on Mount Diablo!)
Ben Ferrari, artist, writer and publisher of Clayton's Pilot Studios
Robert Stewart of Concord (Afterburner Comics)
Matt Harding, Contra Costa resident and creator of Pop Apocalypse and publisher of Not Forgotten: The Best Anthology of Public Domain Super-Heroes
Sarah Leuver, Bay Area based cartoonist/creator of A.K.A.

All attending artists will have their work available for purchase at the event.

In addition, the event will commemorate the legacy of the late Jack Kirby, historically comics' most important creator. Kirby was the creator and co-creator of hundreds of comic book characters (Captain America, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Thor, Hulk, New Gods, Mister Miracle, etc.) in a career that lasted from the mid-1930s until his passing in 1994. 2017 marks the centennial of Jack Kirby's birth and the comics' industry is marking the occasion by raising funds in a campaign called "Kirby4Heroes" to benefit The Hero Initiative, a non-profit charity that creates a financial safety net for comic creators who need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. Flying Colors will donate a portion of the day's sales to The Hero Initiative.

"I'm thrilled to see how our third annual FlyCo Mini Indie-Con is shaping up. We love giving a spotlight to local artists to show their stuff. I know there's going to be something fun for every comics' fan at our event," said Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics. "Plus, our celebration of Jack Kirby's centennial will include some delicious cake. You've got to be here to see this Kirby inspired cake before you gobble a piece."

Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff is an award-winning, internationally recognized comics specialty shop at 2980 Treat Blvd. The store first opened in October 1988 and has been recognized as a leader in comics' specialty retailing.
