Flying Colors Welcomes Special Guests for Free Comic Book Day on May 5 2012

Event Will Feature Writer Zack WHEDON and Artist Georges JEANTY!

Saturday May 5 is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY at Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff in Concord CA and nearly 2000 other stores in more than 40 countries all around the world.

As it has been each year since 2002, FCBD will be a HUGE party here at Flying Colors.  Plans are in place to make this the biggest event yet in the 24-year history of Flying Colors!

Flying Colors' two very Special Guests for this year’s FCBD event:

Zack Whedon and Georges Jeanty!

ZACK WHEDON
Zach is a comic book and screenwriter whose work has been featured on the HBO western drama Deadwood, the FOX science-fiction series FRINGE, AMC’s Rubicon. Zack also co-created and co-wrote the parody musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

Zack is writing both sides of Dark Horse’s FCBD flip book featuring "Star Wars” and “Serenity.” Read a short interview about Zack’s FCBD comic book HERE!

In addition to his work on the Star Wars and Serenity comics, Zack was also the writer of Terminator:1984  (Dark Horse, 2010)

Zack is from a family of writers. He is the son of screenwriter Tom Whedon (The Electric Company, The Dick Cavett Show, Benson, Alice, and The Golden Girls), grandson of screenwriter John Whedon (The Donna Reed Show, The Great Gildersleeve, The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Leave It to Beaver) and the brother of screenwriter/musician Jed Whedon (Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog) and producer/director/writer Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse …and director of a little upcoming flick called The Avengers!)

GEORGE JEANTY
Georges is the artist of the best-selling BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER comics from Dark Horse, including the BUFFY/THE GUILD flip-comic that debuts on Free Comic Book Day! Get a sneak peek HERE!

Georges career in comics was inspired by the classic DAREDEVIL #183 by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson. Early in his career, Georges worked on DC Comics characters such as Green Lantern, Superboy and Superman. His first regular ongoing monthly series was Marvel Comics’ Bishop: The Last X-Man  in 1999. Jeanty also worked on other Marvel characters including Gambit, Deadpool, Weapon X, and the X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse mini-comic for the Activision video game.

While later working on The American Way for Wildstorm,
Jeanty was contacted by Dark Horse Comics' Senior Managing Editor, Scott Allie, asking if Georges would be interested in doing the art for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book. Buffy's creator, Joss Whedon, a fan of Jeanty's work since Bishop: the Last X-Man, specifically asked for him!

Georges' work in BUFFY Season 8 and BUFFY Season 9 have been met with tremendous enthusiasm for fans of the TV series that has continued its stories into the comics and graphic novels.

Both Zack Whedon and Georges Jeanty will be signing their FCBD Special Edition comics (and their other work) from 11am-3pm on Free Comic Book Day.

Then from 3pm-5pm, join us as we welcome back the writer/artist team of Landry Walker & Eric Jones. Their new series, Danger Club, has recently been released by Image Comics and is gathering new readers and fans all the time. Landry & Eric are also the creative team behind Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade from DC Comics. (Danger Club is for teens and older, while Supergirl:Cosmic Adv is for younger readers).

In addition, we'll have the crew from GeekSpeak Radio Show here to talk with fans and broadcast live. And the Mayor of Concord, the honorable and very kind Ron Leone, will be here at 12:30pm for a very special presentation.

Cosplayers are welcome!

We hope you make plans to visit Flying Colors on Free Comic Book Day --- Saturday May 5, 2012!

Let us know you're coming by responding in the invitation section on the Flying Colors Facebook Fan Page!

Wednesday April 4: Avengers vs X-Men Launch Party!

What: It's the launch of the epic battle series of 2012---  AVENGERS VS X-MEN!
Where: At Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff, natch!
When: Wednesday April 4 @ 11am. Be here for the buzz of New Releases' Day!
Who: YOU and all your friends are invited!

You may have read online that a number of comic shops in other areas are doing their parties on Tuesday night, April 3. Given that we would be restrained from selling any of the other great comics being released this week, we made the decision to have our party for Avengers vs X-Men on Wednesday April 4, which, as all comics' fans know is the New Releases' Day for comics.

So not only will you be able to jump on the massive Avengers vs X-Men event, but you'll also be able to see the full line of new comics & other cool stuff being released this week.

We will be taking an unusual "vote" --- choose an Avengers' cookie or choose an X-Men cookie and yur vote will be recorded for which team you most want to win this epic battle! Be here early, we don't know how long the custom cookies will last!

Sign up to get the entire series and you'll get a FREE X-Men vs Avengers lithograph.

Blue Star Moms team with Flying Colors Comics to get comics to our super-heroes overseas

Flying Colors Comics is honored to have donated thousands of comic books to go into "care packages," put together with lots of love by the Blue Star Moms Chapter 101 in Danville CA, going to service members in Afghanistan, Iraq and other outposts the world over.

The whole team here at Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff is thrilled to get emails like this one from Lt John Farr aboard the USS Pearl Harbor.

Dear Comic Aficionados,

We have received a number of packages from Blue Star Moms in San Ramon, CA and each of them had at least one comic book. Thank you for sending them along, they are much appreciated, and they make the rounds rather quickly. It’s always a treat to get care packages from home, and the ones from supporters like yourselves and Blue Star Moms mean so much because you’re sending cool stuff to people you’ve never met.

A little about us – we’re aboard the USS Pearl Harbor just past the halfway point of our seven month deployment to the Persian Gulf. We are a landing dock ship which basically means that we carry a bunch of Marines and their very cool gear, wherever they are needed. We have a well deck from which we can launch or receive LCACs (landing craft air cushion), AAAVs (amphibious assault vehicle), and LCUs (landing craft utility – like the ones in Saving Private Ryan on D-Day). It’s pretty cool when we launch or recover a craft because we fill our well deck with sea water – it’s a controlled partial sinking, with style!

We have hundreds of Sailors and Marines on board and we are very busy doing ship stuff – maintenance, preservation, drills, etc. But our embarked Marines have more time on their hands than we Sailors do and occasionally it’s difficult for them to find things to fill the time. When we do get free time, like a ‘holiday routine’ on Saturdays, we rest as much as we can – and relax, with movies, books, and of course, comics!

Please continue sending comics when you can, it does make a difference to our deployed troops. When I was in Afghanistan in 2010, I remember getting packages from Blue Star Moms with comics, and if I remember correctly, they were from Flying Colors Comics as well. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to brighten the day of a deployed American warrior!

Sincerely,
LT John Tarr
United States Navy
Command Chaplain
USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52)
Thank you so much for this, Chaplain John! We're happy to know the comics we send overseas are well-received and give a moment's respite to those doing difficult jobs with honor and dignity!

Peace!

Rest in Peace, Jean "Moebius" Giraud

Highly influential French artist Jean Moebius" Giraud passed away today in Paris.

I'll let others wax rhapsodic about the mastery of his art in comics ("The Airtight Garage", "Arzach", "The Incal", "Silver Surfer: Parable", "Blueberry", etc.,  and and his design work in film ("Alien", "Tron"., "Willow", among others).

Instead, I'll share a couple of visuals. Two photos from WonderCon 1999... and the original sketch I was given by him at the same event.
